PIND SDGs STAKEHOLDERS ROUND TABLE PARLEY

The technical adviser, office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on sustainable development goals SDGs Dr Bala Yusuf Yunusa says that the federal government has thus far demonstrated strong commitment towards achieving the sustainable development goals SDGs before 2030.

Dr Bala stated this on recently at a high level stakeholders round table parley aimed at advancing the SDGs in the Niger Delta.

The event which was put together by a non governmental organization NGOs known as Foundation For Partnership Initiatives In The Niger Delta PIND was attended by key players from the various Niger Delta states.

Representative of government, civil society organization CSO, and different developmental stakeholders all converged on Effurun recently to appraise the level of achievement for Nigeria as a country on the sustainable development goals SDGs.

The technical adviser, office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on sustainable development goals SDGs  Dr Bala Yusuf Yunusa who took to the podium said that world leaders in 2015 sat together at the United Nations headquarters and came up with a seventeen goals to appraise developments among member countries and would run till year 2030.

Dr Bala added that the SDGs cannot be achieved with a stand alone programmes and projects and as such called for a carefully integration of the goals into national and sub national policies and development plans.

For his part, the the Executive Director of PIND foundation Dr Dara Akala who was represented by Mr James Ekwelachi stated that PIND as a body believe that no single organization can solve the complex challenges in the Niger Delta Region.

He maintained that the body through the high level stakeholders round table parley has highlighted the importance of the sustainable development goals by critically evaluating on how far the Niger Delta states have gone in meeting the SDGs.

Dr Akala who disclosed that the United Nations estimated over three hundred million US dollar for Nigeria to meet the SDGs, added that we are still far from it hence the round table parley to call for urgent and quick approach in getting it right before 2030.

A University Don from the University of Port Harcourt Dr Mina Ogbanga in her presentation on understand the Sustainable Development Goals said that there is the need to create awareness on the importance of the goals to government, developmental partners and even schools.

Others who spoke in a separate interviews including Mr Chime Asonye, Mrs Egonda Esinwoke Ogbolor among others all hailed the initiative of the round table adding that PIND foundation has done well in increasing awareness on the SDGs.

The high level stakeholders round table on advancing the SDGs in the Niger Delta was the presentation of grants to two NGOs known as Mevi Women Initiative In Ondo state as well as the Development Initiative For Community Impact
