As part of activities to mark this year's World Environment Day, a Warri based non governmental organization, NGO, known as Peace Health Environment Water and against Human Trafficking, PHEW Foundation International has distributed nose masks, hand gloves and rain boots to the traders of Ekete market Udu.
The Director General of the NGO, Mrs Chigbo Queen Uche said the exercise was aimed at sensitizing the traders on the need to keep the market environment clean always.
June 5 every year is observed as World Environment Day.
It is a day set aside by the United Nations to create awareness on the importance of a clean environment.
To this end, a non governmental organization NGO known as Peace Health Environment Water against Human trafficking, PHEW Foundation International took out time to go to Ekete market Udu to educate the traders on the importance of a clean environment devoid of air pollution.
The Director General of the NGO, Mrs Chigbo Queen Uche said the message of a clean environment was taken to the market because it is a place where food and other health items are sold to the public for consumption.
Mrs Uche noted that a polluted environment causes several diseases such as lung cancer and stroke which reduce one's life span.
On gas flaring in the Niger Delta Region, she called on government at all levels to compel oil companies in the region to convert the natural gas into electricity.
She said that for Nigerians to enjoy clean air, Nigerians need to use solar and other sources of energy, as well as convert wastes into useful products.
The Head of Environment Department, Udu Local Government, Mr Frank Eruebi who also spoke to newsmen charged traders to clean the market always, adding that the Udu local council will play its own role.
The market leader, Mrs. Treasure Kingdom who spoke on behalf of the traders, thanked the NGO for sensitizing them and used the opportunity to call on government to build a modern abbatoir in the area.
This year's World Environment Day is to campaign against air pollution worldwide.
