Master Akpeti Trust from Delta Careers College Ugboroke has emerged winner of the 2019 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition Award Ceremony For Secondary Schools in Delta State, South South of Nigeria.
Our correspondent reports that Ifeanyi Elijah Dumkelechi from Peniel Academy Agbor and Oboh Victory both came out second and third respectively with seven others given consolation prizes.
The Managing Director, Chevron Nigeria Limited Mr Jeffrey Ewing said that the Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition was initiated by the NNPC and Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture to help promote the study of the chemistry subject among secondary school students and in memory of Professor Stephen Awokoya a great Chemist.
Mr Ewing who was represented by the Manager Policy Government and Public Affairs Field Operations Chevron Nigeria Limited Warri, Mr Sam Daibo added that the competition has engendered great interest in the study of chemistry subject among secondary school students.
He disclosed that over the years the NNPC/CNL Joint Venture has shown much commitment to supporting quality education in Nigeria through investments in education infrastructures, sponsorship of manpower development programmes, award of scholarships amongst others.
The CNL Managing Director emphasized that as a corporate body they have this strong belief that education is one veritable tool for personal and societal growth as well as sustainable development.
For her part, the Chairman of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Delta State Chapter Dr Tina Isichei in her speech said that students should not be deceived by the saying in local parlance WHO SCHOOL EPP but should rather strive for academic excellence.
Dr Isichei stressed out that an educated person stands a far better position to contribute to society than one who is not educated.
She maintained that going by the clamour for diversifying the nation's economy, the knowledge and application of chemistry is needed and therefore implored the awardees to live up to the task ahead of building a virile state and Nigeria at large.
Speaking in a similar vein the Chairman of the event, Professor Sunday Olawale Okeniyi noted that the award ceremony by NNPC/CNL Joint Venture, the Chemical Society of Nigeria and the Delta State Ministry of Education has helped to reward excellence in the subject of chemistry.
Professor Okeniyi who was represented by Prince Jay Oristsejolone Oghifo revealed that the Chemical Society of Nigeria established in 1971 to raise national consciousness on the centrality of chemistry for the overall progress of man and development of the society.
The Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Chief Patrick Ukah who was represented by the Director Science Education Department, Ministry of Education Asaba Mr Iloba Sunday stated that the Delta State Government was proud to identify with the Chemical Society of Nigeria Delta State Chapter and their funding partner Chevron Nigeria Limited for the valuable support provided to schools in promoting the study of chemistry in the state.
He told the people that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has built, renovated and equipped science laboratories in public schools, so as to make teaching and learning of science subjects easier.
This year's Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition and Award Ceremony For Secondary Schools saw ten participating students presented with prizes.
Prizes were also given to schools as well as teachers.
