NIGERIAN MARKETS: PRICES OF RICE AND BEANS SOAR, COULD FORCE THE TWO COMMODITIES OUT OF MENU TABLE

The continuous rise in the prices of rice and beans in the markets could take the two major stapple food out of the reach of the common man.

A basket of foreign rice sells for N2,800 while the Nigerian rice goes for N2,000 even as a bag of the local rice sells for twenty three thousand naira now in the market.

Rice and Beans which used to be a regular menu on the dinning table of many homes will soon be out of reach.

The price of the two stapple food have gone up in the markets.

Investigation reveals that inflation and other economic policies of government now determine how traders sell their commodities in the market.

A basket of foreign rice has risen to N2,800. The bag sells for N34,000 or more while the Nigerian rice sells for between N21 and N22,000 per bag.

A basket of the local rice also sells for N2,000.

Traders dealing on rice at Igbudu Market, Warri react.

While the high cost of rice, beans and other essential commodities are making traders especially the distributors and middlemen smile to the banks, the poor and low income earners feel the pains.

They however suggested to the federal government to open the closed Nigerian boarders while also encouraging more people to go into farming.

The concern of many Nigerians is that prices of commodities continue their upward trend and never come down in Nigeria.
