03.09.2022            BURKINAFASO

Burkina Faso's military leader, who was ousted in a coup on Friday, has formally agreed to step down, religious and community leaders said.

They said the country's new self-declared leader, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, had accepted Lt Col Paul-Henri Damiba's resignation and conditions he had set.

The announcement followed attacks on French institutions, after it was reported that Lt Col Damiba was sheltering at a French military base.

The African Union has demanded the return of constitutional order by July 2023 at the latest, agreeing with the regional group Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) that the ousting of leader Lt Col Damiba was "unconstitutional.

But Ecowas has since praised "the various parties in Burkina Faso for agreeing to a peaceful settlement of their differences", as days of power struggles came to an end without bloodshed.

Iranian security forces clashed with students at a prestigious university in Tehran overnight, as anti-government protests continue to sweep the country.

Reports said a large number of students at Sharif University of Technology were trapped in a car park as security personnel tried to flush them out.

The anti-government protests erupted three weeks ago, after the death of a woman detained by the morality police.

Mahsa Amini, 22, fell into a coma hours after officers in the capital accused her of breaking the strict law requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf. She died in hospital three days later.

Riot started at her funeral on 17 September and have spread across the country to become the worst unrest seen in the country for years.

European Union's envoy for the South Caucasus and Georgia has called for investigations into videos that appear to show potential war crimes being committed by Azerbaijan and Armenia in recent clashes that have threatened a fragile cease-fire agreement ending the worst fighting between the two neighbors since a 2020 war over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Baku and Yerevan have been locked in a conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh for years. Armenian-backed separatists seized the mainly Armenian-populated region from Azerbaijan during a war in the early 1990s that killed some 30,000 people.

The two sides fought another war in 2020 that lasted six weeks before a Russia-brokered cease-fire, resulting in Armenia losing control over parts of the region, which is part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent districts.

Under the cease-fire Armenia ceded swaths of territory it had controlled for decades, and Moscow deployed about 2,000 troops to the region to serve as peacekeepers.

However, the situation in the region remains tense, with both sides accusing the other of breaking the cease-fire.

03.09.2022.              ETHIOPIA

Authorities in Ethiopia's rebel-held Tigray region said they had withdrawn fighters from occupied parts of a neighbouring region to counter a major offensive unfolding to the north.

Pro-government forces and rebels led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front resumed fighting in late August after a five-month truce, dimming hopes of peacefully settling nearly two years of war.

The latest upsurge has drawn Eritrean troops back onto the battlefield in support of Ethiopia's federal and regional forces, which are fighting the TPLF on multiple fronts in the country's north.

Tigrayan authorities said late Sunday that a redeployment of fighters from occupied parts of the Amhara region to the south of Tigray was necessary to counter intensifying combat to the north.

Tigray's regional authorities said the withdrawal had been under way for three days and could be reversed if the front came under attack again.

Thousands of Russians mobilised for military service in Ukraine have been sent home after being deemed unfit for duty, the latest setback to President Vladimir Putin’s conscription of 300,000 servicemen.

Mikhail Degtyarev, the governor of the Khabarovsk region in Russia’s far east, said several thousand men had reported for enlistment in 10 days but many were ineligible.

He said the military commissar in Russia’s Khabarovsk region was removed, but that his dismissal would not affect the mobilisation.

Russia’s first call to arms since World War II, declared on September 21, led to widespread discontent and drove thousands of men to flee abroad.

The move was billed as enlisting those with military experience.
