*ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN OGONI LAND: Activist Charges Communities to Cooperate with FG*

The National Coordinator of Center for Peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ, Comrade Sheriff Mulade has called on the Federal Government to speed up the clean up, remediation and restoration of the degraded Ogoni land in Rivers State, caused by oil and gas exploration activities by multinational oil companies about forty years ago.

Comrade Sheriff Mulade, a traditional High Chief in the Ancient Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State made the call in Abuja over the weekend, while speaking with newsmen on the highly devastated Ogoni land. He called for collaboration among the Federal, Rivers State Governments and Communities, federal and State environmental agencies, as well as CSOs and NGOs towards working out modalities to remediate and restore the degraded Ogoni environment for safe habitation.

Analysing the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP's scientific investigation and recommendations on Ogoni land, Chief Mulade said forty years after the crude oil spillage in Ogoniland, there are evidences that heavy metals have contaminated the land and ground water, the community's source of drinking water contains a dangerous concentration of benzene substance, nine hundred (900) times  more than the recommended standard for drinking water and the soil contamination is more than five metres deep in many areas that were studied.

Speaking further, he appeals to all stakeholders particularly the people of Ogoni to give maximum support to President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government to carry out remediation and clean-ups activities of the land, he said most of the spill sites which the oil companies claimed to have cleaned were still highly polluted. He said there were evidences of oil films showing the dumping of contaminated soil in unlined pits and there are evidences of water being coated with hydrocarbons more than 1000 times the level allowed by Nigeria's drinking water standards.

The  CEPEJ National Coordinator took a swipe on SHELL and other oil multi-nationals over their failure in meeting global environment best practices and standards for remediation. He expressed shock that SHELL and other IOCs which carried out the cleaning, remediation and restoration work on the Ogoni land could not even meet the minimum Nigerian standard or their own specified standard of operation.

While charging the Federal and Rivers State Governments to show more concern for the health of Ogoni people, Chief Sheriff Mulade recommended that the Federal and Rivers State Governments should beef up environmental monitoring and regulations in the country, initiate collaborative actions among the host communities, oil companies and the Government, as well as ensure compliance with environmental guidelines spelt out in operational policies, establish regulatory bodies towards eliminating or minimising the causes of oil spill and making it compulsory for the polluter to pay compensation costs to host communities, State and Federal Governments.

You are Recommending GLOBAL WEST NIGERIA LTD, On the ground that we are Non-indigenes working with OMS, I don't and will never have any issue with my own leader and elder brother company.

What the said body is doing is doing is what is call cheap blackmail, you should have come out open that you want global west nig Ltd to be in charge of the Surveillance work, instead painting us as  non-indigenes.

I am not the one awarding CONTRACTs either given out Surveillance Slots, I stand to correct you that OMS SURVEILLANCE work is been handled by well recognized Son's from the CREEKS.

More also if GLOBAL WEST NIGERIA LTD take charge of any Surveillance WORK that cut across my communities, you cannot short change or deprived my people of our rights as host in the RIGHT OF WAY.

Warri -

The attention of Host Communities leader have been drawn to an online publication by an unrecognised group with a fictitious name Warri Escravos and Forcados (Burutu) Youths accusing CAPT HOSAN OKUNBOR,  CEO, Ocean Marine Solution, the contractor In charge of PPMC Trunk Line & Trans Forcados Pipeline (TFP) Oml 30 of illicit and oppressive activities in the creek of Niger Delta.

According to an opinion leader and former chairman Diebiri Batan Community in the Ancient Diebiri kingdom in Warri South West Council Area of Delta State,
Engineer Don Dickson Ogugu described the publication is unfair, barbaric and borne with malicious falsehood with the intention of tarnishing the image and reputation of our respected Community Leaders.

"It is sad to note that  some persons are hiding under the umbrella of lies and blasphemy against their own Izon brother, for their personal interest and self aggrandisement" He said.

He advised the purported Central Youth Body to do their findings and consultations from their leaders and the RIGHT OF WAY COMMUNITIES, before being incited against the peaceful coexistence between OMS & Host communities Carrying out there Surveillance work in the pipeline Right of way (ROW).

"It would recalled that, Ocean Marine Solution (OMS) Invited all host communities within the reach of there knowledge and informed them of the Surveillance Security work given to them on the NNPC/PPMC 24" DELIVERY PIPLINE from Warri River to Escravos Terminal for negotiation and employment late 2017" he added.

As the then Chairman, I was among the representatives at the negotiation meeting.

He pointed out that after several deadlock in the Negotiations, the following below was unanimously agreed by the Ijaw and Itsekiri Host Communities in the NNPC/PPMC line that:

2) OMS will employ 15 Workers each from communities with large mile kilometers space and 10 workers from the small mile kilometers.

In a chat with newsmen at Osubi at the weekend, Chief Blessing Oborevwori commended Governor Okowa for faithfully executing his Prosperity for all Deltans Agenda in his first tenure, and said his creation of Delta State Capital Territory Development Authority has given Asaba the befitting look of a State Capital City.

The Governor's Aide also commended Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for establishing the Delta State Traffic Management Agency, DESTMA which he said has sanitized the State transport system and drastically reduced the rates of accident and death on our roads.

While charging Deltans to support Dr. Okowa towards completing his development projects in parts of the State before the end of his second tenure, Chief Oborevwori thanked the Delta State PDP family, Okpe people and other Deltans for supporting Governor Okowa towards success in his five-year old Administration.

He used the opportunity to thank the Governor's Wife, Dame Edith Okowa  for helping underprivileged people in the State through her pet project, 0-5 Initiative.
